Sunset Center Par tner s with Kennedy Center for Educational Programs B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D C armelites are aware of just how special the Sunset Community and Cultural Center is. Not only home to a world-class per- forming arts venue, the Center's outreach and educational programs touch and enhance the lives of students throughout Monterey County. It's nice to know that others recognize the value of the Sunset Center. Recently, the esteemed John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, announced that Sunset has been selected as the only West Coast organization to participate in its 14th annual Partners in Education Program. According to the Kennedy Center, the pro- gram is "designed to assist ar ts organizations throughout the nation to develop or expand educational par tnerships with their local school systems." "Not enough people are aware how much we serve the community outside the 93921 zip code," says Christine Sandin, Sunset's executive director. Sunset is par tnering with Nor th Monterey County Unified School District (NMCUSD). Based in Moss Landing, the district encompasses four elementary schools, one mid- dle school, two high schools and an independ- ent study center. The primary focus of this partnership is to give teachers the tools they need to bring arts edu- cation to their students. The Partners in Edu- cation Institute was held April 27-30 in Washing- ton, DC; and was attended by representatives from both Sunset Center and NMSUSD. For more information, visit www.sunset.org.
