C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 6 87 But my find of the day was an early 1900s book "Hiawatha," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and complete with illustrations by Harrison Fisher. I mixed in the rich heritage of ranch with a splash of early Americana and blended it all together to create a room of comfort and informality. I threw old Kilim pillows into a wooden cart with an oil painting of a waterfall and some wood shutters and topped it with an iron cross backed by an old barn door and a paint- ed wagon wheel. That contradiction becomes fashion. There is a studied nonchalance about a great room. It has a dis- tinctive point of view. And while I have seen gorgeous rooms with current modern style, there's just something reassuring about a room styled with antiques. It's like a glamorous movie heroine who is the star of my movie and expresses that style through her character. And today, she surprises us by wearing hide skin and faded fabrics with rusted chains around her neck. I am still inspired by what moved me as a child, like that laid-back ambiance that Clint Eastwood created in his films. I am still there, walking right into his world by creating my own world of old weathered stuff tossed together with abandon and dreams and sprin- kled with magic. Marjorie Snow is a writer and photographer with a vast knowledge of antiques and their history. Snow was the owner of Terra Cotta in Las Vegas, an exclusive architectural vintage gallery, which was featured in numerous West Coast magazines. Clockwise from top left: rare wooden toy horses atop a galvanized bar table; kilim pillows, wooden shutters, oil painting, barn door and wagon wheel; watercolor of a Native American Indian on horse and Indian head pottery. Rare 1906 Book "Hiawatha" with illustrations by Harrison Fisher.
