"The dog was created specially for children. He is the god of frolic." ~ Henry Ward Beecher Working Dogs BY MICHAEL CHATFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLI ULDALL 82 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 6 Fritz and Zelda T hese days, 9-year-old Silky Dachshund Zelda is semi-retired. "She comes in a cou- ple of times a week, greeting dogs on our dog- friendly patio," says Geano Abraham of Allegro Gourmet Pizzeria in Carmel's Barnyard Shopping Village. But Fritz is the star of the show. "Fritz just turned one," his owner says. A Schnauzer/Yorkie mix—Abraham calls him a "Snorky" or "Yauzer"—Fritz is the heir to the late Ziggy, the hugely popular Allegro mascot. "People still come in and ask for him," Abraham says. Zelda and Fritz have lots of canine compa- ny at work: all dogs eat free on the patio, and their owners are more than happy to take up the pizzeria's offer. Bella B ella has spent nearly all of her 10 years at MEarth, the nonprofit environmental education facility in Carmel Valley adjacent to Carmel Middle School. "As a puppy, Bella loved roaming around the grounds here," says Tanja Roos, MEarth's executive director. But that freedom sometimes led to trouble. "She went to the ER a lot because she liked to eat from the compost pile and sometimes she would taste wild mushrooms." These days, this Boxer has slowed down somewhat and spends most of her time in the office, napping in sunny spots and rising to greet visitors. If she likes someone, it's not unusual for her to plop her head down and use that person's foot as a pillow.
