And because the pretzel is a recognizable go-to snack, its crunchy saltiness is a popular com- ponent in specialty candy bars and caramels. A focus on chocolate. At The Sweet Life candy shop, a staple in Manhattan's Lower East Side since 1982, owner Sam Greenfield says the company's hand-dipped dark- and milk-chocolate pretzels have been a popular item since day one. "There has definitely been a lot more customers inter- ested in these crunchy and salty coated treats," he says. Another chocolate-covered snack Greenfield's customers love is Asher's Chocolate Smothered Potato Chips, a best seller at The Sweet Life. At Asher's in Souderton, Pa., the Milk Chocolate Smothered Pretzel has been a staple in the lineup for more than half a century. It continues to be a company best seller, says Barton McBride, vice president of sales, national accounts. The company has grown the line over the years with pret- zel products that feature milk chocolate and toffee. "As a Pennsylvania manufacturer, we benefit from our proximity to the premier pretzel bakers in the U.S. Our pretzels are produced to our specs and enrobed in a pro- cess that ensures the balance of flavor that they're known for," he explains. Snack Factory, Princeton, N.J., which innovated the pretzel segment with Pretzel Crisps, a thin, flat, baked pretzel, began dabbling in chocolate in 2008. Though not an everyday item, the company has been successful with its Holiday Indulgents line, featuring White Chocolate & Peppermint Pretzel Crisps and a new flavor, Dark NOT JUST FOR BREAKFAST… Which crunchy treat is next in line to get a sweet coating?
