Gray Salt Caramels The best way I know to make the most of what we have is to appreciate both time and all the players who are active on its stage. There are still 24 hours to the day, but I feel far better when I go into them with a positive and appreciative attitude. important improvements I've ever made in my life. Time is a non- renewable resource; no matter what we do, or don't do, it's never coming back. It only makes sense to invest it wisely. I want to spend each minute in a way that adds to the quality of my life and/or the lives of those around me. If I'm standing in line, I stretch, read or watch the people around me to learn something about human behavior. If I'm walking across the street in front of the Deli, I try to pick up paper out of the gutter; it takes pretty much just as long to walk past it as it does to reach down and pick it up. 4. Be Appreciative and Make Every Day a Holiday The best way I know to make the absolute most of what we have is to appreciate both time and all the players who are active on its stage. There are still 24 hours in the day, but I feel far better when I go into them with a positive and appreciative attitude. I know that I'm fortunate to have who and what I have in my life. I try to appreciate, as best I can, every person, every minute, every little thing: the great people I get to work with; the wonder- ful customers who come to us every day; the kids who come in to celebrate their birthday with us; the amazing foods we get to sell; how excited my dog gets when we get ready to run; or the way she lies next to me on the couch when I sit down to write in the evening. It's one of the ways of youth that we feel like time will go on forever. But of course, if you take anything or anyone in your life for granted, trouble—or at the least, regret—are pretty sure to follow. The way I see it, every minute I don't appreciate is a minute wasted; there are no second chances. Every minute, hour or day that I can spend on the positive side of my life's ledger sheet, the more reward- ing my life will be, the more effectively I can add to the lives of those around me, the lower my stress and the longer my life is likely to be. There are never any guarantees, but when I go out, I want to go hav- ing worked hard and devoted serious time to high appreciation of all that's around me. |SFM| Ari Weinzweig is co-owner of Zingerman's Delicatessen in Ann Arbor, Mich., and author of Zingerman's Guide to Good Leading, Part 2: A Lapsed Anarchist's Approach to Being a Better Leader.
