Taste, convenience, price, thirst quench, and health- and energy- boosting claims also drive purchases. The retail coffee market is strong. RTD coffee is the fastest- growing segment of the $13.6 billion retail coffee market—with 20 percent market share—and is on track to experience a growth spurt of 67 percent through 2022, according to Mintel's "US Coffee and Tea on Premise Market Report, 2017." RTD coffee is also popular at home. According to Mintel's "US Coffee Industry July 2017" report, 83 percent of adults drink some type of coffee at home, with 46 percent consuming RTD coffee drinks in bottles or cans and multi-serve refrigerated ready-to-drinks in bottles or cartons. The Trends " Transparency, craft, and the variety of selection in RTD is giving the category panache," Meinhardt notes. "Consumers are starting to care about what is in these products, where the ingredients come from, and appreciate the craft that goes into their production." Both large and small players are moving beyond generic ingredients, understanding that customers can be very selective.
