A look at sales and current industry performance shows fresh, refrigerated, frozen, plant-based, and health-focused are key words related to growth. Notably, seven of the top 10 categories by retail sales are chilled or frozen foods—led by cheese and plant-based cheese; and meat, poultry, and seafood. The three categories that exhibited very strong sales growth are also fresh or frozen—frozen desserts (+42 percent), refrigerated entrees (+27 percent), and yogurt and kefir (+21 percent). Thirteen categories out of 63 grew by more than 20 percent. The most impactful was specialty water, up 76 percent and driven by the explosive success of sparkling water. Most of these categories are health- and wellness-centered, even frozen desserts, which are focusing on protein-enriched and dairy-alternative varieties.
