BROOKLYN HARVEST MARKET Operated by Allegiance Retail Services/Foodtown, this 15,000-square-foot supermarket opened its doors in April 2013. Location: The waterfront space in the heart of Williamsburg does a bustling business with locals. Grocery upgrades: In addition to traditional grocery- store fare, departments include a premium cheese counter with more than 300 varieties of high-quality cheese (and plenty of samples). Imported offerings including Peeler Gruyere, Scharfe Maxx, Moliterno, and three kinds of truffle cheeses, plus domestic cheeses like Grason from Virginia, Grafton cheddar from Vermont, and California's Cypress Grove Chevre. Complementing the cheese selection is a variety of specialty crackers, including Raincoast Crisps, Kii Naturals, Rustic Bakery, and 34 Degrees. The in-store bakery, tucked in a back corner of the store, serves up specialty cakes, cheesecakes, fresh breads, baguettes, olive pockets, and a variety of fresh-baked cookies and pastries, plus Crescent Moon coffee. Best known for: Customer service, says store manager Fati Murati. "We're more focused around the needs of the customer," he says. "If they want specialty items, we try to bring them in." According to Murati, the store is able to meet specific customer requests 95 percent of the time, with requested items arriving at the store within a week. Brooklyn Harvest Market also has a bigger footprint than other local alternatives, Murati says, and caters to the increasingly upscale neighborhood. That includes a focus on organic and locally made and produced foods, he adds. The store also offers a pizza counter with delivery and pickup services, a fish market, an olive bar, and an array of craft beers. The concept has been successful—so much so that another location opened on Union Avenue in Brooklyn this spring. 25 N. 5th Street, Brooklyn, NY; 718.387.5533 112 ❘ SPECIALTY FOOD MAGAZINE specialtyfood.com
