The 1998-99 Tigers were the last team to be ranked in the Associated Press women's basketball poll, spending four weeks among the country's elite, capping it with a ranking of No. 23. The team's appearance in the polls on Dec. 14th, 1998 was its first time there in 14 years, but would come to an end at the hands of league foe Saint Louis in a 73-72 Billiken victory that snapped a nine-game Memphis winning streak and knocked the team out of the national polls (the Tigers have not returned to the national rankings since). Memphis would battle ups and downs the remainder of the season, including a loss at No. 1 Tennessee, but would regroup for a deep run in the WNIT, using wins over regional foes Middle Tennessee, UT Martin and Arkansas State to advance to the WNIT semifinals. Tamika Whitmore was named the C-USA Player of the Year for a second straight season and was the team's lone all-conference honoree. Whitmore would lead the NCAA in scoring in her senior campaign and would be the program's second straight WNBA draſtee, being draſted by the New York Liberty with the 30th pick overall. Whitmore would go on to play 11 seasons in the WNBA and overseas, earning WNBA All-Star honors as a member of the Indiana Fever in 2006.
