The women's team accepted a bid to the National Women's Invitational tournament following the 1982-83 season. Included in the 20 wins for the Tigers that year were wins over Oregon, No. 4 Kentukcy and No. 14 South Carolina. In the Metro Conference tournament, the Tigers were eliminated by Louisville, 55-53, and ended up in the NWI tournament, where they used wins over Southern Illinois and Oral Roberts to advance to the championship game, where they fell 68-58 to New Orleans.
