The NCAA expanded the tournament field in 1986 to 40 teams, and one year later, Memphis State was one of those 40 teams in the field. Memphis State received a first round bye in the tournament field, and faced No. 3 seed Virginia in the second round, falling 76-75. The Tigers had two first team all-Metro conference honorees in Wanda Dillard and Connie Hibbler and Dillard also garnered the program's first, and only, Metro Conference Player of the Year award. Coach Mary Lou Johns claimed her third Metro Conference Coach of the Year Award (1984, 1986, 1987) and Hibbler also earned Metro all-tournament honors.
