Memphis went 21-5 through the regular season in 1997, winning the regular season crown, but was tripped up by Marquette in the Conference USA semifinals and had to wait for an NCAA at-large bid for a third-straight NCAA berth. The Tigers drew No. 14 Notre Dame in the opening round, and fell, 93-62, to end the season with a 22-8 mark. Freshman Tamika Whitmore earned first team All- C-USA honors, while LaTonya Johnson and Kitty Allen were named to the second team. Allen also picked up the program's first-ever C-USA Defensive Player of the Year honor while Whitmore was the Tigers' lone representative on the all-tournament team.
