The 1981-82 season marked the first- ever year that the NCAA held a women's basketball championship, fielding a 32- team field that included then-Memphis State. The No. 3 seed in the Mideast Regional, the Tigers defeated No. 6 seed Ole Miss, 72-70, then fell to No. 2 seed (and regional host) Tennessee, 78-63 in the regional semifinals. Freshman Regina Street was the Metro Conference MVP in 1982. She was joined on the all- tournament team by Linda McKinnie.
