The 1997-98 Tiger team made it four straight NCAA appearances. Seniors LaTonya Johnson and Dwelia Smith remain the only two players in program history to help their Tiger teams to four straight NCAA appearances. Memphis picked up its second C-USA tournament title with wins over USF, Cincinnati and host Louisville en route the league's automatic bid. The Tigers were rewarded for their 22-7 mark with a game against Youngstown State in Raleigh, N.C. Unfortunately, it was the Penguins who came out on top of the NCAA match-up, 91-80. LaTonya Johnson and Tamika Whitmore were both named first team all-conference honoree, while Whitmore picked up her first C-USA Player of the Year award. Both Johnson and Whitmore earned spots on the C-USA all-tournament squad.
