SPECIALTY FOOD NEWS LEGISLATIVE REGULATORY NEWS FDA Creating Food Facility Profiles… The Food and Drug Administration has published its intention to collect additional & facility profile information on a voluntary basis from registered food facility firms. Firms could submit information to create a profile that the FDA would use in determining a firm's risk and the frequency of inspections, among other possible uses. Information in the profiles will include facility type (e.g., manufac- turer/processor, the products, hazards other re-packer/packer); (biological, physical, chemical) and preventive control measures if required by regulation; and information like food-safety training, facility size, operational schedule and number of employees. The FDA is using its authority under the Bioterrorism Act and the Food Safety Modernization Act to carry out the program. But first it must ask for public comments about the regulatory burden on businesses that decide to submit the information for a profile. Healthy Foods Cheaper by Weight, USDA Says…The USDA says healthy foods are less expensive at retail if measured by weight or portion size instead of by calories, including grains, vegetables, fruit and dairy foods. The agency is considering asking Congress to include in the next Farm Bill support for small retail stores who improve their depth of stock to increase the range of healthy foods offered. The report, "Are Healthy Foods Really More Expensive? It Depends on How You Measure the Price", is available on the USDA government site at http://www.ers .usda.gov/publications/eib96/.
