n November 2015, the Food and Drug Administration released its final rule on
the Foreign Supplier Verification Program and Third Party Certification. This
came nearly five years after Congress passed the Food Safety Modernization
Act, which increases the power of FDA, including additional authority to
regulate food being imported into the U.S. In short, FSMA changes the FDA's
responsibility to preventing unsafe food from coming into the country, instead
of responding when unsafe or adulterated food has been identified.
