A mix of Port Morris locals and residents of Manhattan and other New York boroughs are increasingly trekking to the tav- ern—and to the main brewery a few miles north. There, about 10 employees produce brew made with New York State ingredients. The tasting room attached to the brewery accounts for 35 percent to 40 percent of total revenue, with the rest coming from sales at liquor stores, bars, and restaurants. Lopez says they offer free tours, but because the space is so small, "it's more like letting people see what's going on and then taking any questions they have." "Our products are in bars in the metro area, some grocery stores throughout the state, and right now a small amount is avail- able in the UK," Lopez says. "But we're almost exclusively in New York." That includes the "Rise Up Rye," produced in conjunction with the hit Broadway show "Hamilton" and sold at the concession stand at the Richard Rodgers Theater, where the show is staged, and a handful of local outlets. New York is where Gun Hill plans to grow its business. "Local is more important and more viable for us than national," Lopez says. In the future, the owners would like to open more taverns, where they also plan to craft innovative products, like a distilled beer. Though they hope to expand their reach, Lopez is confident that the Bronx is the place to be. "It's definitely true that the Bronx is attracting more makers; space is available at more reasonable rates," he says. "We were priced out of Manhattan and Brooklyn, but the Bronx has been such a part of our lives, we're excited to bring beer back to the borough. The Bronx is the last frontier." gunhilltavern.com Esther Crain is a New York-based freelance writer and author of "The Gilded Age in New York—1870-1910".
