So, when the oppor- tunity to join Good Spread came along about two years ago, he dove in to help fix a detrimental issue: malnutrition. Good Spread was born out of a nonprofit called Mana Nutrition, which uses pea- nut butter to make vitamin-fortified therapeutic treatments used to cure malnutrition. (These are also called RUTF, which stands for Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Food). Good Spread produces a natural peanut butter blended with honey and partners with Mana on a mission to end malnutri- tion in countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania, by producing one RUTF packet per jar of Good Spread purchased. Each RUTF packet contains 500 calories of peanut butter, healthy fats, multivi- tamins, and powdered milk specifically targeted to children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. In addition to Vitrano, Good Spread was founded by Alex Cox and Mark Slagle, both former employees of Mana who recognized the energy and emotion involved in helping to deal with the prob- lem of severe malnutrition.
