"For Mark and Alex, it led them to say 'we'll jump in and run this thing.' They knew the solution existed, and they created an infrastructure to create the product at the right price point to make it available—a jar of Good Spread costs any- where from $5.99 to $7.99. For me, this was too compelling to pass up. This problem could be solved, it saves lives, and that's all I needed to say 'let's get involved.'" Spreading the Good Word Before Good Spread officially began, Mana was working as an entirely grassroots effort to get the word out about RUTFs and the problem of malnutrition around the world. To gain insight on how people felt about this problem, Mana launched its "Manabego Tour," and toured around the country in a Winnebago. "This was the ultimate market research," Vitrano says. The biggest ques- tion, he says, was how to get potential cus- tomers involved. After spending time in the market- place, Vitrano and the Good Spread team recognized how important it was for people to bring a product into a home that tastes great, but is better for you too. Good Spread decided to use the same natu- ral but conventional peanuts that Mana uses in the RUTFs, to build its prod- uct. The finished peanut butter is fresh, not unfamiliar, accessible, and with new SKUs has expanded the Good Spread supply chain. New f lavors hitting shelves include Chocolate Pretzel, Honey Banana, Unsweetened, and Salted Honey, which is an upgrade to the original product. Each product is organic and Fair Trade Certified, and uses conf lict-free palm oil from Ecuador. According to Vitrano, each RUTF costs about 30 cents to manufacture, and another dime to 20 cents for delivery, depending on the destination. Through vertical integration with Mana and World Vision, an organization that identifies places that are in need, every time a jar of Good Spread is purchased, the cus- tomer is included in Track Your Impact, which directly connects them to a packet of RUTF that is delivered to a child.
